A New Kind of Scientific and Cultural Institution.
The Microbiome Support Institute is an independent institute working at the intersection of science, culture, and public understanding. Our focus is the microbiome in all its contexts — human, environmental, built, and planetary — and the role microbial life plays in shaping long-term health, ecological stability, and societal resilience.
We operate as both a knowledge platform and an interpretive institution. MSI translates microbiome research into coherent narratives that can inform individual choices, institutional frameworks, and cultural imagination, while remaining grounded in scientific rigour and evolving evidence. It is our view that these conversations can and should include everyone — regardless of academic background, discipline, or lived experience; understanding deepens through exchange, and we have much to learn from one another.
At a time when health and environmental systems are increasingly strained, microbiome science offers insight into how living systems maintain balance, adapt, and recover. MSI exists to help this knowledge circulate beyond laboratories — into education, policy, design, and everyday understanding — so that the future can be approached with greater ecological awareness and care.
The Microbiome Future Institute is built around two complementary spaces:
MFI Continuum and MFI Commons.
Continuum serves as our research foundation, a scientific journal dedicated to advancing, synthesising, and situating microbiome science across human, environmental, built, and planetary systems, with rigour, context, and long-horizon thinking.
Commons is its cultural counterpart — a shared and common narrative space where this knowledge is translated into language, story, and lived meaning, inviting curiosity, care, and collective reflection. Together, they reflect our understanding that living systems requires both depth and accessibility, evidence and imagination, precision and participation.
MSI Continuum asks how knowledge is generated and held responsibly; MSI Commons asks how that knowledge enters culture, shapes care, and becomes part of how we live. Both are essential to making the invisible visible — and to supporting futures grounded in microbial intelligence, relational thinking, and planetary continuity.
